Guatemala Soccer Camp: 2007

This January 2007, AccesSportAmerica ran a weeklong soccer camp for Guatemalans' with and without disabilities in the lake Atitlan region. This first year project was an incredible success because of the enthusiastic response of our athletes, and plans for next year are well in place. Partnering with Camp Kikotimaal, our AccesSport Instructors brought their soccer expertise to close to 20 athletes with various disabilities. Morning sessions were a focal point of the camp, and a highlight for all. It was a new experience for our AccesSport Instructors to run, kick and push chairs through the heavy dirt of the field. In the afternoons, we taught close to 200 kids aged 5-12 who were affected by last year's giant mudslide. The field we played on was literally on top of the former village that had been buried. All the kids now live in shelters with their families. It was extraordinary to teach in Guatemala, as most of the kids we met there had never had any formal soccer training.

We brought down nearly 100 soccer balls, cleats and jerseys which were given to four schools in the area.

Next year along with soccer we are hoping to bring our windsurfing program to Lake Atitlan. Thanks to all who supported this years project. To provide further support and for more information please contact Peter@AccesSportAmerica.org.
